Tape on vests worn by construction workers is often called reflective tape, but it’s actually retro reflective tape. There is a big difference.
Reflective tape acts as a mirror, so it sends the light back out in different directions.
Retro-reflective material is made with tens of thousands of tiny glass beads that reflect light and send a focused image directly back to the original light source. For example headlights on a vehicle, allow the driver to not only see a shiny object ahead but also to identify what that shiny object is - a sign or possibly a pedestrian.
Reflective Advantage uses 3M’s superior quality retro-reflective material to decorate scarves, vests, dog coats and accessories that are highly visible at night. These designs light you up at night!
Give yourself the Reflective Advantage.
Be Safe…Be Seen!
In Edmonton alone (not including St. Albert, Sherwood Park), 297 pedestrians were injured and 10 killed in 2016. The highest number of injury collisions involving pedestrians happened in November (37), the majority of those happened in low-light conditions (morning and evening).
Pedestrians crossing the road with the right of way — either at a marked crosswalk, an unmarked crossing at an intersection, or at a signalized intersection with a walk sign — made up 68%. Pedestrians injured or killed crossing without the right of way made up nearly 17%. Cars turning left made up 34% of pedestrian collisions. Cars turning right: 19%. (2016 Annual Collision Report)
So far in 2017, nearly 200 pedestrians have been injured and 6 killed in Edmonton.
Vision Zero is a global movement that started in Sweden 20 years ago. It proclaims that NO pedestrian deaths are acceptable. This involves designing and redesigning the infrastructure of streets and crossings to create an environment where vulnerable users are protected. Edmonton was the first major city in Canada to commit to this program. It will take time and financial investment to upgrade Edmonton streets and crossings to achieve this goal but in the long term it works. Until that happens let’s protect ourselves with whatever advantage that we can.
If as many people who are injured or killed in pedestrian car crashes every year were dying of a rare disease – everyone would be right on it--taking action, making sure they didn’t catch it themselves. Sadly however, we seem to accept pedestrian crashes as being an unavoidable side effect of co-existing with cars – “as long no one in my immediate family is injured.”
It’s time to give ourselves a visible, reflective advantage. Wear a splash of colour - unashamedly bright bold Hi Vis colours in daylight/low light conditions and reflective material at night.
The bottom line is: No one can guarantee your safety but you can give yourself and your loved ones an advantage. And that’s what this is all about.
Tip the scales in your favor. Be safe…be seen!
The pedestrian never wins in a collision with a vehicle, most injuries are serious and life changing – no matter who has the legal ‘right of way’. Each year, thousands of innocent pedestrians are killed or injured on roads all over the world. Pedestrians are vulnerable road users.
Pedestrian-vehicle collisions are devastating to everyone involved. You can clearly see the social impact just by the stories shared by anyone who has ever been involved in a collision or a “near miss”. Family and friends try hard to support the injured pedestrian to cope with shattered hopes and dreams - often never able to resume life as it was before the crash. And the driver will never forget the nightmare of pain, suffering and destruction of the event that injured or killed the pedestrian. Everyone involved wishes that they could just turn back the clock to before it ever happened and make it never happen.
As a driver, I’ve had a few close calls myself--being startled by the sudden appearance of a pedestrian, completely invisible to me until the last moment--dressed completely in black, at the side of the road or crossing the street, leaving me almost unable to stop or avoid them until the very last moment. It was frightening to think that even though I was paying attention to driving; someone could have been inadvertently hurt or killed because they were invisible.
As a pedestrian walking our dogs, I’ve also experienced a few close calls near our acreage -- having to jump into a ditch pulling the dogs to safety to avoid being hit by a speeding vehicle.
Not wanting to be the victim of a pedestrian collision because a driver had not seen me, I started looking for solutions. The only products available seemed to be construction safety-type vests, athletic gear for runners and cyclists or jackets with discreet little reflective logos embroidered over the front chest pocket.
I wanted something fashionable, stylish and easy to wear. Something that would make an individual visible to a driver in daylight, at nighttime and in low light conditions such dawn and dusk.
Something bold and bright for dog walking; something less garish for every day street wear…and something elegant to wear in the evening!
And… something bright and cute for the dogs that would make them easy to see day or night, summer or winter. Piper and McDuff modeled the first Dog Coats made of Hi-Visibility colors and decorated with 3M retro-reflective materials. The response on our walks was amazing! Drivers slowed down, smiled, waved and pointed at how cute the dogs were. Then came the matching walking vest for me. I was a larger presence on the road so cars could see me first, before they saw the dogs. Star shaped 3M reflective designs and comfortable pockets were added, surprising some fellow pedestrians one night. They shone a flashlight on me and said that I lit up like a Christmas tree – where could they get a vest like mine?
Next, the fancy fun part – Dazzling Elegance, a line of classic, pixie and elfin style scarves and shawls created in black mesh with 3M retro-reflective star silhouettes floating on a galaxy of delicate silver stars. Perfect to wear for an evening out as a stunning accessory or tuck into a pocket or purse - ready to wear when needed.
Then, the Commuter Scarves in bright Hi-Vis colors for the bold and beautiful souls out there, and discreet colors with more conservative designs for the professional business travellers who wouldn’t feel quite so stylish decked out in Hi-Vis.
Finally, something to give everyone a visible reflective advantage with style!
A splash of unashamedly bright bold Hi-Vis colors for daylight/low light conditions and magical retro-reflective designs to light up the night in the glare headlights. The bottom line is:
No one can guarantee your safety but you can give yourself and your loved ones a reflective advantage. And that’s what this is all about. Tip the scales in your favour.
